Technically, there\u2019s a lot more that\u2019s possible, and I\u2019ll continue to expand this case study from time to time.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I conducted a technical analysis of these local business websites to assess their use of structured data for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/en\/local-seo\/\" title=\"SEO-Friendly - The Local SEO Expert from Berlin\">local SEO<\/a>. In doing so, I used code snippets from schema.org as markers for a custom search with Screaming Frog. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\" id=\"aioseo-case-study-mit-xxxx-lokalen-unternehmen\">Case Study Featuring More Than 100,000 Local Businesses<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\" id=\"aioseo-tldr-grafiken\">TLDR, Top 3 To-Dos &amp; Charts on Structured Data<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\" id=\"aioseo-too-long-didnt-read\">Too long, didn&#8217;t read<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a few local service providers and businesses take full or even partial advantage of the possibilities offered by structured data. Personal and organizational names, as well as phone numbers and email addresses, are particularly common. I assume this is driven by the setup processes of SEO plugins such as Yoast.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For SEOs, there is <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">great potential<\/span><\/strong> in location-specific, product-specific, price-specific, and industry-specific awards and business hours. As an SEO professional, you should definitely take advantage of this. Here\u2019s a quick tip: you can also add geotags to photos taken on-site at local businesses. This adds about 2 KB per JPG and, in my opinion, doesn\u2019t negatively impact performance. You just have to make sure you don\u2019t tag and compress the images in that order\u2014do it the other way around.      <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Video Markup<\/span><\/strong>: I found such short image videos on just under 20% of the websites. The actual number is likely higher, since I only checked videos embedded via YouTube. However, of the videos I found, only just under 10% were labeled as <a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/VideoObject\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"About the \" videoobject=\"\" schema=\"\">VideoObjects<\/a>. If you already have the video, you should definitely make this small effort and, for example, provide a transcript.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ProfessionalService<\/span><\/strong>: For small, business-card-style websites\u2014such as those for lawyers\u2014it\u2019s often worth marking up the services pages with the <a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ProfessionalService\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"About the \" professionalservice=\"\" scheme=\"\">ProfessionalService<\/a> schema. The reason is that such subpages are usually very similar and are therefore often completely removed from the index by Google as near-duplicate content. With the appropriate markup, I\u2019ve personally been able to successfully counter this issue multiple times in such situations without changing the visible content. The Schema <a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Product\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"About the \" product=\"\" schema=\"\">Product<\/a> also works, but it can conflict with the widely used ProvenExpert seal. That\u2019s because they also use this schema and then generate the star ratings using AggregateRating.    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-datenbasis-identifikation-der-strukturierten-daten\">Data Set Generation &amp; Statistical Analysis<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-extraktion-von-werkenntdenbesten-de\">Extraction, or: How Does Web Scraping Work?<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A basic approach to extracting specific values from websites is to use an <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">XPath<\/span><\/strong>. It\u2019s particularly easy when the element in question is only displayed if a value is actually stored there. Here is the link to the corresponding guide from Screaming Frog on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/web-scraping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"Screaming Frog's Guide to Web Scraping.\">web scraping<\/a>.    <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Local-SEO-Statistik-Datenbasis-1024x324.jpg\" alt=\"Example: Domain for a Local Business\" class=\"wp-image-2337\" title=\"The profiles in business directories often list the domains of local businesses and service providers.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Local-SEO-Statistik-Datenbasis-1024x324.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Local-SEO-Statistik-Datenbasis-300x95.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Local-SEO-Statistik-Datenbasis-768x243.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Local-SEO-Statistik-Datenbasis.jpg 1174w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><center>Example of a public link to local businesses<\/center><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, in the profiles of some business directories, a button labeled &#8220;Open Website&#8221; or something similar appears when a domain is specified. To extract such <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">domains of local businesses<\/span><\/strong> , I use a configuration that consists primarily of three elements: the Include function (or Custom Search), the Exclude function, and Custom Extraction.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Screaming Frog should be configured to crawl large websites by default. Here&#8217;s a link to a Screaming Frog guide for more tips and tricks: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/how-to-crawl-large-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"Screaming Frog's guide to crawling large websites.\">How to Crawl Large Websites<\/a>. I use Google Bot Mobile as the user agent.  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I use the first crawl to identify relevant subpages within a specific segment, such as car dealerships. I start with a category page.   \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whenever possible, I use the URL structure via the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the `include` function<\/span><\/strong> with a regular expression (.*autohaus.*) This is the fastest method because it ensures that only relevant URLs are crawled.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In principle, you can also use a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Custom Search<\/span><\/strong> for text in the frontend. However, this requires scanning the entire website, which takes a loooong time and can easily push local devices to their limits. For this approach, you\u2019ll usually need the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Exclude function<\/span><\/strong> , for example, for widget URLs. I always start by refining the list of URLs to exclude for the respective website over a few iterations. Only then do I start the full crawl. This often saves several million URLs, which noticeably speeds up the process.     <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the second crawl, I continue to use the &#8220;Include&#8221; and &#8220;Exclude&#8221; functions, but now I use the URLs identified in the first step as a list in upload mode as my starting points. In practice, this allows me to find significantly more local businesses in the respective business directory during the second pass. In addition, in the second step, I work with a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">custom extraction<\/span><\/strong> of the elements I\u2019m looking for using an XPath. Here\u2019s an example of what that looks like: \/\/a[@class=&#8221;inline-flex items-center&#8221;].  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-bereinigung-von-gescrapeten-daten\">Cleaning of Extracted Data<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another step that is usually necessary is the subsequent <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cleaning of the extracted data<\/span><\/strong>. This is because XPath always extracts the entire element at once. Here are my intermediate steps:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">amount of data<\/span><\/strong> in a crawl like this can easily become too large for Excel or Google Sheets. A bigger problem than the number of rows is often the number of cells, because Screaming Frog creates a new column for each custom search and each custom extraction. As a result, you can quickly end up with hundreds of thousands of cells. However, with the right configuration, you can filter out a lot of data right within Screaming Frog. If the export function still spits out too much data, you can manually split up the data to be exported if necessary. For example, by holding down the Shift key, you can select rows 1 through 10,000 and then copy and paste them. Repeat this until all relevant data is transferred to either Excel or Google Sheets.      <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unwanted bycatch<\/span><\/strong> is another issue when extracting data with XPath. The entire content of the respective element is extracted. This includes, for example, link attributes and CSS classes. However, you can easily clean this up in Google Sheets, for example, using \u201cFind &amp; Replace\u201d in combination with some regular expressions. You should also be mindful of issues like trailing slashes and remove such duplicates using logic.      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you have a cleaned-up list of domains, you can <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">export them as a CSV file<\/span><\/strong>. You can use this file format in Screaming Frog under &#8220;Mode&#8221;   &gt;&gt;  Upload the &#8220;list.&#8221; Then it&#8217;s time to move on to the actual analysis of the structured data for local SEO. <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-verwendete-strukturierte-daten\">Analysis of Structured Data for Local SEO<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To analyze how local businesses use structured data, I ran a third crawl for each individual segment. This crawl is based on the list of domain addresses obtained through the first two steps. <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-startseiten-lokaler-unternehmen\">Homepages of Local Businesses  <\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To manage the volume of data, I included <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I checked only the homepages<\/span><\/strong> . I consider this methodologically sound, because structured data for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seo-freundlich.de\/en\/local-seo\/\" title=\"SEO-Friendly - The Local SEO Expert from Berlin\">local SEO<\/a> should be found on the homepage of a local business.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This third crawl in each case is essentially based on a standardized configuration of Custom Search. This includes a category that I use to create individual <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">markups for industries<\/span><\/strong> . To reduce the number of cells required, I linked the individual search terms in this category with an \u201cOR.\u201d It looks something like this, for example:     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;AutomotiveBusiness&#8221;|&#8221;AutoBodyShop&#8221;|&#8221;AutoDealer&#8221;|&#8221;AutoPartsStore&#8221;|&#8221;AutoRental&#8221;|&#8221;AutoRepair&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aioseo-komplette-liste-der-custom-search-werte\">Complete list of Custom Search values<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You shouldn&#8217;t overload Custom Search, because otherwise too many calculations will be required for the analysis. At the very latest when your device crashes, you&#8217;ve gone too far with the number and\/or combination of search terms.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To provide as comprehensive a picture as possible of how local businesses use structured data, I have created several categories. Based on my practical experience, I have also <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I also looked for videos<\/span><\/strong> . The use of a video is a strong indicator of a willingness to invest in online marketing. In many cases, however, the embedding is not ideal.   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Location: <a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/GeoCoordinates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" AreaServed\">AreaServed<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Product\/Service:  \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Product\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"About
